Welcome to the Utah Organization of Chinese Americans website. Our Chapter was formed in 1998 as a means of organizing and coordinating the efforts of the various Chinese associations in civil rights and political issues. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which does not engage in any partisan politics or foreign policy issues. Our goal is to improve the lives of Chinese Americans in the United States, particularly in Utah. We are a local chapter of the national Organization of Chinese Americans.
Our MissionThe Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc. (OCA) is a national, non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization. It is dedicated to securing the rights of Chinese Americans and Asian Pacific Americans through legislative and policy initiatives at all levels of government. OCA works to embrace the hopes and aspirations of nearly two million citizens and residents of Chinese ancestry in the United States, as well as to better the lives of ten million Asian Pacific Americans across the country. The Utah Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc., (UOCA) works to represent the political interests of all the Chinese Americans in Utah as the local chapter of the national organization. Chinese and Asian Pacific Americans in Utah belong to an incredible variety of professional, social, family and ethnic associations. It is because of this myriad of voices that we are perceived to be politically weak and disorganized. UOCA gives us a tool to develop a strong, united political and social voice that represents our best interests in the diverse community that Utah is becoming.
The History of OCA and UOCA The Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc. was established in 1973. As of 2002, there are 80 OCA chapters in the U.S., one in Hong Kong, and 37 college affiliates. OCA is the only national Chinese American organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. with full time staff as well as volunteers and interns. It represents 25,000 Chinese and other Asian Pacific Americans. OCA has changed it name to reflect the fact that it represents all Asian and Pacific Islanders. We are now known as simply as "OCA". The Utah Organization of Chinese Americans was established in 1999. UOCA was recognized as OCA's Most Outstanding Chapter, the first chapter to receive this award in its first year of existence. In addition, it earned an award for Most Outstanding Programs. As of 2002, this growing organization and its College Affiliate have been active representing and advocating for the rights and interests of the Utah Chinese and Asian Pacific American Community. UOCA supported the nomination of Bill Lann Lee, supported the Hate Crimes Summit in Ogden, provided assistance with Census 2000, and participated in events such as public information seminars and the annual Chinese Children’s Festival. In 2002, UOCA successfully hosted the OCA National Convention in Salt Lake City.
